Chevron, Shell, Wells Fargo fund powerful cops groups

” Numerous powerful business that drive environmental oppression are also backers of the exact same cops departments that tyrannize the extremely neighborhoods these business stars pollute,” write the authors of a recently launched investigation by the Public Responsibility Effort The report is entitled “Nonrenewable fuel source Industry Contaminates Black & Brown Communities While Propping Up Racist Policing” and it’s a damning indictment of business giants who safeguard their astronomical wealth by exploiting the vulnerable.

From the report:

  • Shell, among the biggest nonrenewable fuel source business on the planet and a significant worldwide emitter of carbon contamination. It is building a big ethane cracker plant near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that some feel could start to turn Appalachia into the next “Cancer Alley”– the label for the New Orleans-to-Baton Rouge passage of Louisiana refineries, where Shell is also a major polluter Cancer Alley goes through several Black neighborhoods that deal with extremely high rates of contamination and cancer– largely believed to be caused by refining and petrochemical operations. Shell is a “ Featured Partner” of the New Orleans Authorities & Justice Structure and a sponsor of the Houston Police Department’s Installed Patrol.
  • Entergy is a publicly-traded, Fortune 500 company headquartered in Louisiana that also services parts of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas. Entergy is probably the most powerful corporate force in Louisiana, with existences on prominent chambers, organisation associations, humanitarian organizations, and even charter school advocacy groups across the state. Entergy is a “ Included Partner” of the New Orleans Cops and Justice Structure with top billing on the foundation’s sponsors page. In 2018 Entergy made headings after it paid stars $60-200 dollars to impersonate grassroots supporters at a City Council conference that was considering the business’s proposed gas-fired power plant in New Orleans East, home to a large Vietnamese community. The resulting scandal, suit, and city board investigation triggered the Entergy New Orleans CEO to action down
  • Wells Fargo is the second biggest global banker behind fossil fuels, with nearly $198 billion in funding between 2016 and2019 The scandal-ridden bank has a multitude of ties to cops structures. It is a platinum sponsor and has two board seats with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Authorities Foundation. It is also a partner and donor to the Seattle Police Structure, a director and sponsor of the Atlanta Authorities Foundation, and a donor to the Salt Lake City Police Structure. When it comes to financial ties to racist practices and organizations, Wells Fargo comfort with the authorities is just one example: the bank has actually been involved in prejudiced loaning, propping up private jails, and much more (for more information, check out the ACRE’s Forego Wells project).
